Multiple beds have been planted to service specific niches for wildlife (or attempt to do so).
The primary bed is the full sun, prairie inspired, cottage garden in the front yard. This has been my biggest project and took a significant amount of preparation. In order to be as successful as possible I attempted to source plants from as many different nurseriest as possible which took a LONG time. This bed is the newest (2026) and has established well.
Every other bed on the property is 100% experimental and started in 2025. The side yard is an attempt at a shady woodland bed but with the loss of two treelawn trees has been much sunnier than anticapted. A small wildlife pond will be dug in this year (2026).
The backyard beds are half full sun and half mostly shade and full of my favorite plants. Turns out my and the pollinator's favorites are very aggressive! Make sure to buy only one mistflower and jewelweed, if you buy them!
Overall, I have been shocked by how quickly all my plants have established (a testament to the fine local native garden centers) but I have been almost more shocked by how quickly the wildlife adapts and takes to the additions!
