I started replacing my lawn in the parkway about four years ago and have since enjoyed all the diversity of bee, butterflies, flies, wasps, and beetles including fireflies. I have definitely been experimenting and watching what thrives and what does not, but the amazing colors that pop out in June and July is awesome! Also it's been delightful to watch a charm of goldfinch every year come to feast on all the seeds- especially the coreopsis! They are so light they are able to land on those delicate stems and hold a cup of seeds with one foot and munch away. House sparrows are simply too heavy and not evolved for these prairie seeds. Even here in urban Chicago if you plant it they will come. :)
