We live on a ravine that we are re-wilding: removing honeysuckle, building brush berms, planting native trees. We have paw paw, maples, oaks, and we have added tulip trees, sycamore, catalpa, redbud, dogwood, and witchhazel (nativar). Also added natives: wild senna, spiceberry, oakleaf hydrangea, bottlebrush buckeye, bead fern, and pennsylvania sedge on the shady, ravine side of the house. On the west side of the house, we removed about 350 sq ft of unneccessary driveway and added a sunny pollinator's garden, featuring a serviceberry, shrubby cinquefoil, blue stem, anise hyssop, ox eye sunflower, blazing star gayfeather, bee balm, black eyed susan, yarrow, ironweed, blue vervain, coreopsis, cardinal flower, penstemon, and sweet flag. And then we built a rain garden at the lowest part of the property and have a thriving patch of common milkweed, swamp milkweed, joe pyeweed, St John's Wort, shrubby St Johns wort, cup plant, red twig dogwood, another service berry, and a river birch. And some other things. All a work in progress.
