Our office roof deck is a rare workplace asset, offering staff a place of respite and an opportunity to step outside for fresh air. In enhancing this space, we sought to do more than simply beautify it—we aimed to create something to contribute to the local ecology while deepening our own understanding of our connection to it.

Although our deck sits six stories above downtown and is surrounded by skyscrapers, we recognized its potential to serve as a stopover for pollinators traveling between the Boston Common and the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

We carefully selected plant species to ensure continuous blooms from April through October, to provide forage for pollinators throughout the growing season. In doing so, the garden not only supports biodiversity but also creates a vibrant, dynamic environment where staff can engage with nature in an otherwise dense urban setting. We aim to expand the garden as time goes on to increase the ecological services provided.
