Wakeman Town Farm, Westport’s organic demonstration homestead, installed a 100-foot pollinator border in 2017. Its purpose has been to showcase a wide variety of native perennials and shrubs which provide high habitat value to pollinators and birds.
The border was designated a demonstration garden when Westport joined the pollinator pathway in 2019. Virtually all of the plants featured are natives, and the garden teems with butterflies and bees, drawn by its succession of bloom from spring to fall. Its beauty today stands tribute to the hands of many volunteers, young and old, who have worked hard each season, to keep the ever-present invasives at bay, and tend the garden so that it is a source of nourishment and shelter for pollinators and birds year round.
Visitors to the Pollinator border are also welcome to tour the Farm’s grounds, including our alpacas, dwarf goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens and beehives on the property, as well as 60 beds of vegetables and annuals grown and harvested for sale at the Saturday farmstand.
