Our grounds are an Audubon at Home Certified Wildlife Sanctuary, and include a one-acre urban forest with pollinator gardens spread throughout the property. We also maintain a Certified Monarch Waystation and are on the Homegrown National Park map. Our property also features many mature White and Red Oak trees as well as Willow Oaks, Red Maples, several young Redbud Trees and a nice colony of Sassafras Trees. The Monarch Waystation features Common and Swamp Milkweeds and Butterfly weed. It includes many native nectar plants -- Joe Pye Weed, Early Goldenrod, New England Asters, Orange Coneflowers, 2 kinds of Mountain Mint, Frost Asters and more. We have organically grown nectar plants as well, including Zinnias and Lantana. Throughout our grounds we have pollinator gardens that include Zinnias, Scarlett Beebalm, Mountain Mints, Blue Mistflower, Butterfly Weed and more. A 1/4 acre slope beside the church received a Conservation Matching Grant from the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District last year to stabilize the area with native plants and shrubs and protect the mature Oak Trees threatened by erosion.

I've spotted 4 monarch caterpillars on my third year milkweeds this summer (2025), and my yard hosts several bee species, native preying mantis (for the last four years!), numerous moths, spiders, so many crickets, visitor butterflies, and more pill bugs than I can shake a stick at. I have two pawpaw trees, two persimmons, a black cherry, spicebush, echinacea, eastern prickly pear, columbine, New England aster, blue false indigo, grey-headed coneflower, false sunflower, passionflower vine (it keeps coming back!), sunchokes (I'm in danger), Ohio spiderwort, swamp and common milkweed, meadow rue, scaly and dense blazingstar, hoary skullcap, goldenrod, groundnut, winged loosetrife, mistflower, anise hyssop, and spotted bee balm.
