Pollinator Pathway

Castro Valley

Upcoming Events 3.jpg

Castro Valley's Pollinator Pathway is growing through the Bee Highways initiative, a community effort to create connected habitat for pollinators across the East Bay. By transforming churches, schools, parks, and other shared spaces with California native plants, volunteers are creating "stepping stones" of habitat that provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for native bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other wildlife.

Bee Highway projects throughout Castro Valley, Faith Lutheran Church, FirstPres Hayward, and FirstPres Hayward Children's Garden, and other inspiring community gardens are the cornerstone of the project. Together, these sites demonstrate how partnerships and local action can build healthier ecosystems and more beautiful neighborhoods—one garden at a time.

Town Gardens

First Presbyterian Church of Hayward FirstPres
2490 Grove Way, Castro Valley, CA 94546

This welcoming native landscape demonstrates how everyday community spaces can become thriving pollinator habitat. Carefully selected California native plants provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial wildlife while reducing water use and strengthening local biodiversity.

The adjacent Children's Garden offers young visitors hands-on opportunities to explore nature, discover the importance of pollinators, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. Created and cared for by volunteers through the Bee Highways initiative, these gardens reflect FirstPres Hayward's broader commitment to serving the community—from its food pantry, community gardens, and tiny home initiatives to youth programs, arts partnerships, and services for neighbors in need.

Together, these efforts show how caring for people and caring for the environment can grow side by side, inspiring visitors to create connected habitat in their own neighborhoods.

The Faith Lutheran Church Bee Highway transforms church grounds into welcoming habitat for pollinators and birds. Native flowering plants provide season-long resources while creating a peaceful landscape for visitors and the surrounding neighborhood. The garden illustrates how faith communities can play an important role in restoring biodiversity and connecting fragmented habitats throughout the East Bay.
