POLLINATOR PATHWAY
Easttown Township is a primarily residential township located approximately 25 miles from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Central to Township life is the Village of Berwyn- a section of the township populated by homes, shops, restaurants, and a train station. The Village is along Route 30, a busy four lane road that started as a gravel road in 1790 to connect Philadelphia, PA to Lancaster, PA. The Environmental Advisory Council (EAC; a Township appointed board of residents) has planted four native plant gardens and built three flow through downspout planters along this historic, busy road for pollinators to use and also to beautify the Route. Our ultimate goal is to encourage other municipalities along Route 30 to build pollinator pathway gardens that will connect our gardens to others that already exist along the Route. The EAC envisions a Pollinator Pathway along the whole length of Route 30 from its easternmost point in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to its westernmost point in Astoria, Oregon.
The Chester County, Pennsylvania Planning Commission is helping with the project through their Keep Chester County Beautiful campaign by providing signage for the gardens and by hosting an online seminar the EAC gave on creating pollinator gardens Learn More: Keep Chester County Beautiful.
The EAC has planted native plant rain gardens, pollinator gardens, and installed downspout planters elsewhere in the Township. We also have planted over 30 native trees in the Village. We have a native plant seed library at the Easttown Township Library at 720 First Ave., Berwyn, PA from which residents can take seeds or to which they can contribute seeds.

Easttown Township EAC planted several Pollinator gardens along Rt 30, major thoroughfare in our township. Before planting, it was turf grass. This garden is at a traffic intersection, so height of plants is very important so that drivers can see the roadway clearly.
We chose Antennaria neglecta , Field pussytoes, which grow 6 to 12 inches tall, bloom in Spring and provide a great ground cover. Aster Cordifolius Little Carlow, Blue wood aster grows 1.5 to 2 feet tall. Allium Cernuum, nosing onion blooms July to August and grows 1 to 2 feet tall.
Juniperius Horizontalis, Blue rug Juniper, is evergreen, grows 4 to 6 inches tall and spreads up to 6 feet. Asclepias Incarnata, Swamp milkweed is 3 to 4 feet tall. These plants were selected to provide flowers throughout the summer, support a variety of pollinators, and provide winter interest. This garden was planted in the Fall, 2025. WE monitor the gardens weekly and are thrilled to see monarch caterpillars, bees and ants. It’s so rewarding to see the garden at work.

Route 30 Pollinator Corridor
Keep Chester County Beautiful and the Easttown Township Environmental Advisory Council held an introductory meeting for residents, businesses, and organizations near the Route 30 Corridor to discuss opportunities for creating a "Route 30 Pollinator Corridor” on March 18, 2026. Easttown's EAC members talked about their recent successful pollinator gardens in partnership with local businesses, and participants had the opportunity to learn about and get inspired through Keep Chester County Beautiful and PennDOT’s resources and programs.
