Pollinator Pathway

Traffic regulating bumpouts along Main Street have been planted with pollinator friendly native plants and are pesticide free.  Bumpouts are along Main St connecting Kellogg Creek to the south and Johnson Creek to the north. 

The show stoppers are the penstemon and blanket flower!

The Front Porch Park + Pollinator Garden Habitat Plaza is a brand new new horticultural installation and demonstration project designed to expand the Milwaukie Main Street Pollinator Pathway that runs between Johnson Creek to the north and Kellogg Creek to the south -- connecting to the scenic Willamette River to the west.

 

With support from The City of Milwaukie, Xerces Society, Historic Downtown Neighborhood Association, The Milwaukie Rotary, and other partners, we have been working to remove invasive non-native weeds, remove trash, enhance the soil quality, and demolish / de-pave areas of asphalt and cement to plant street trees as we converted an on-street parking space to public mini-park with seating areas and native plant oasis with interpretive signage.

 

The public right-of-away previously given up for parking cars has become a new civic plaza benefiting people from all walks of life who can linger, picnic, and build attachment with their community.

 

It also provides a case-study in how a private business can re-invest profits into the community to enhance the commons, an investment that not only benefits people and the planet but is good for the bottom line.

In March 2024 the City of Milwauikie began construction on the Washington Street Improvement Area. Final design called for 3 traffic medians/islands on Washington St near SE 30th and SE 31st Avenues. City engineers and staff approved a request from the Historic Milwaukie NDA to plant the medians with native plants.

On November 9, 2025 a six-pack of volunteers from the NDA planted the medians with native plants.
