We have garden beds in our backyard featuring 65 (and growing) species of native plants and additional pollinator friendly non-natives. Many were grown from seed, others purchased. Over the summer, the garden is abuzz with happy pollinators.
Some of the flowering natives include Sundial Lupine, Showy Goldenrod, New England Aster, Foxglove Beardtongue, Anise Hyssop, Butterfly weed, Swamp milkweed, Common Milkweed, Whorled Milkweed, Golden Alexanders, Wild Columbine, Purple Coneflower, Wild Bergamot, Black Eyed Susan, White Snakeroot, Common Violet, Trumpet Honeysuckle, Buttonbush, Greater St. Johns Wort, Shrubby St. Johns Wort, Wild Senna, False Indigo, New Jersey Tea, Pussytoes, Cardinal Flower, Spotted Bee Balm, Blue Sage, Steeplebush, Northern Blazing Star, Blue Vervain, Clustered Mountain Mint, Joe Pye Weed, and others. Native trees include Sugar Maple, Red Maple, River Birch, Red Oak, White Oak, Black Tupelo. Additional non-flowering natives include Christmas Fern, Royal Fern, Lady Fern, Cinnamon Fern, Pussy Willow, American Holly, Little Bluestem, Big Bluestem, Northern Sea Oats.
