We currently have about 5 acres that we started 4 seasons ago. We chose to plant in 12' strips for better management. The original intent was to attract butterflies; however, we had not anticipated the many varieties of bees and birds which have abounded. The first year we even raised several covies of quail. Last winter we planted an additional 10 acres in the manner of farming. Go big or go home, right? Of course, that will take a few years to develop. Until 2018 our field was in traditional farm crops of corn, beans, and wheat. When my husband retired from farming, he sowed hairy vetch as a cover crop. While stunning and irresitible to birdlife such as quail, we are still pulling vetch out of the flowers.
