I have been planting native species in our yard for approximately 17 years. My yard is shady/part sun and the plants and shrubs are mostly spread through my front yard with different growing conditions such as under large trees, a wet area near our driveway, a lowlying area near pines, and in well cultivated, enriched beds near our house where they are intermixed with other types of plants like bulbs and a few non-natives.
I put dried leaves over a lot of the plants in the fall, so the beds have dried leaves not commercial mulch between the plants. They receive compost that is a mixture of leaves and kitchen scraps.
I use a lot of deer spray and fence in many of my shrubs.
