We have ~2 acres of edibly landscaped homesite built on a shale quarry site. The soil has been challenging to master! Featuring a mix of garden vegetables, perennial fruit and native plants. We lean heavily on Mediterranean plants that love this hot dry climate and plant strong strong pollinator sources such as flowering brasicas, parsley, dill, fennel and blackberry. Approximately 300 different types of herbs, canes, fruit trees, grapes, flowers and vegetables plants bring constant changes in a few small acres.
We have 78 acres of mixed oak-conifer forest. A native shade garden is part of our erosion control from the driveway and we use plants like lupine, rocky mountain bee plant, oregon sunshine, clarkias, coyote mint and vinegar weed to nurture our pollinators in the garden. We are surrounded by a mountain of microclimates from sunbaked rocky hillsides to dark cool canyons and are helping nature restore itself after a period of logging decades ago greatly altered the ecosystem. The native plants are numerous and highly varied but include the beautiful Meadow Birdfoot treefoil (Hosackia pinnata) in a few stretches of the creek, abundant Henderson's shooting star (Primula hendersonii) and Tolmie's pussy ears (Calochortus tolmiei) along with Pacific dogwood (Cornus nuttallii), flowering red currant (Ribes sanguineum), Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia). Lewis' mock orange (Philadelphus lewisii), and oval leaf vibernum (Viburnum ellipticum), in the canyon, and several ceanothus species on the ridges.
