We have lived here for 4 years and have tried to tackle removing many invasives while at the same time adding native perennials to support pollinators and wildlife. The biggest challenge has been the burning bushes that are present in the neighborhood that spread into the woods and that aren't completely on our property. We have removed many and also removed over a dozen large Norway maples. Also, digging out tons of lily of the valley all around the house! It is still a work in progress.
Some of the native plants we have added include: butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, whorled milkweed, prickly pear, clethra summersweet, golden alexander, shrubby St John's Wort, eastern columbine, smooth aster, blue lobelia, cardinal flower, bluestem, coreopsis, bee balm, and broad leaf mountain mint.
Most of the perennials are in the front yard which is the only area we have full sun. We have a heavily shaded backyard due to two massive silver maples as well as an oak tree on the back property line. We also have a ton of native violets in the lawn in the backyard that also spread into the garden beds as a green mulch.
I have learned so much while aiming to restore the biodiversity of our relatively small yard. Happy to be a small part of the pollinator pathway!
