This pesticide-free property features three distinct, multi-layered native plant habitats designed to support local wildlife across varied light and moisture conditions. A long, walled bed anchored by a mature oak (Quercus) transitions from partial sun to deep shade, planted with milkweed, boneset, ironweed, queen of the prairie, 'Jeana' phlox, large camas, heuchera, cardinal flower, trout lily, and snakeroot. A shaded southern tree line of sassafras, black cherry, and juvenile oaks provides a secondary woodland corridor, while a driveway rainwater swale manages runoff with moisture-loving species including blue flag iris, cardinal flower, boneset, Culver's root, yellowroot, marsh marigold, swamp sage, wild strawberry, and ferns. Beyond visiting monarchs and yellow swallowtails, the habitat supports robust populations of essential native beneficials, including carpenter bees, great golden digger wasps (Sphex ichneumoneus), and iridescent great black wasps (Sphex pensylvanicus). The abundance of insect life actively sustains multiple broods of nesting native birds and house sparrows across the property. Intact leaf litter, exposed soil, and standing winter stems are intentionally preserved across all zones to provide essential nesting and overwintering shelter.
