Location: To the north of the North Street School.

Owned/designed: Owned by the Town of Greenwich, designed by the Pollinator Pathway group, and planted by Pollinator Pathway members with help of Parks and Recreation.

Environmental setting: A woodland edge along a busy road. Several trees scattered throughout the area provide partial shade and absorb noise and air pollution.

Highlights: This area is the southern terminus of a one-mile-long pollinator pathway. Once fully installed, the pathway will connect North Street School with Greenwich Catholic School and St. Michael’s Church. This site is still under construction. Planted two years ago thousands of native perennials and a few native shrubs and trees has transformed an area choked with invasive species into a pollinator heaven. New signs guide visitors along paths and identify different plant species encouraging learning and exploration. At the center of the garden is an outdoor classroom protected by a tree canopy. Tree logs placed to seat visitors have been installed for future educational programs. Woodchip pathways lead through the newly planted area into the natural woodland connecting these two very different habitats. Establishment of new growth in an area affected with invasive species is challenging. The struggle is visible in some areas where the native plant coverage is not dense enough to keep the alien species at bay. As the efforts of planting and weeding continue, more progress will be observed with each growing season.
