We began by eliminating lawn products when we bought the property in 2013. By that winter, we had several species of songbirds return. We planted common milkweed the follow year and began to see monarch butterflies. Gradually we installed native plant "islands" in place of our lawn and then began "meadowing" parts of the yard. The remaining lawn is filled with violets, dandelions, clover and Queen Anne's Lace for most of Spring-Fall. We have seen an increase in pollinators including many different butterflies and moths; native bees of all sizes.
