When I bought this property, there were only 3 bushes on it. I have since created 5 native/perenial gardens, water baths for insects and birds, and one ground-cover garden that is also perennial and has native plants. I am on a corner lot with no backyard -- so all my yard is exposed. So as a gift to my neighbors, I garden. I have a Leopold Bench to sit on and a Little Free Library.
My yard includes a diversity of native wildflowers that bloom from early spring through late fall, along with native trees, shrubs, grasses, and sedges. I have planted host plants for butterfly and moth caterpillars, flowering herbs, and left patches of bare ground for ground-nesting bees. Hollow stems, leaf litter, and brush piles remain in places to provide nesting and overwintering habitat, and adding logs for additional shelter for wildlife. I also provide a shallow source of clean water, where bees, butterflies, and other pollinators can safely drink. The plants include Prairie Dock, Rattlesnake Master, and Coneflowers, to name a few. Trees include Blue Spruce and an old Oak.
