I started in the backyard creating a 200 sf native flower garden adjacent to my vegetable garden. I laid down cardboard to smother the grass and planted densely to keep it at bay. After success in a small scale, I decided to convert the entire front yard to native plants and fruit trees. I laid cardboard and wood chips (lucky to have a friend that does tree work!), and have planted all of the trees and shrubs. Over the next year or so, I will continue to fill in with 1000+ flowers, ferns, grasses. When complete there will be at least 80 species. I selected drought-tolerant species since the yard faces due south with no shade (until the trees and shrubs grow). I also favored edible plants - beach plum, American hazelnut, pawpaws, chokeberries, blueberries

beach plum, American hazelnut, pawpaws, chokeberries, blueberries, wintergreen, big and little bluestem, multiple species of milkweed, bee balm, and asters, and many more!
