The garden was started 30 years ago when I bought the property that had been subdivided from a long ago farm. It was hand cleared and in the process we saved a maple sapling ,two oak saplings, and several red cedars. Once the house was built I got to work on developing garden spaces that expanded and connected via grass pathways. Fortunately, it led to a professional gardening career. And planting ornamentals gave way to building habitats and ecosystems and bringing biodiversity that continues to amaze us in our own back yard. I planted a Heptocodium ( 7 sons flower), and within two seasons the migrating monarchs engulfed it on their way south. I planted several Lindera Benzoin, and every year we marvel at the Spice Bush Butterflies that it hosts. I am now starting to do some flower farming, and my vegetables are even more prolific. The garden has changed over these several decades, and plants have come and gone, but it continues to teach me the wonders of the natural world.
See above; I also try to have at least 70% native plants to the Northeast, in a mix of multi season interest trees, woody shrubs, perennials and annuals.
