So far, I have replaced about 25 % of lawn with native plants; perennials, shrubs and trees. I use no lawn fertilizers and no pesticides. I have all but eliminated oriental bittersweet and am identifying other non-native and invasive plants to remove or reduce.

This is a partial list of dozens of plants installed:

Beach plums, sweet fern, rosa rugosa, swamp miljweed, butterfly weed, blueberries, American spikenard, huckleberries, black chokeberry, phlox, cardinal flowers, echinea, prickly pear cactus, wild lupine, wild columbine, wild geranium, dogwood, winterberry hollies, spicebush, native raspberries (in containers), American redbud and more.

My neighbor is also committed to such a theme but dealing with more shade. Together we have observed rising populations of monarchs, swallowtails and other pollinators.
