When I bought my house in 2021 and first tried to dig a hole in the front garden, I was confronted by black landscaping tarp, compacted wormless soil, and mostly sad plants. My mom and I spent 3 days ripping it out, and since then I've been on a mission to create a little pollinator refuge, starting with my first native - the incredible rattlesnake master - and branching out to new species every year. In year 2 I found several monarch caterpillars chomping butterfly weed, and started finding worms and grubs in the soil. This summer goldfinches are devouring coneflower and sunflower seeds. It brought me joy to kill some turf with cardboard boxes and convert it into a stone path and shade garden, now in its second full summer and starting to flourish. It has been truly beautiful to see how one little patch can nourish so many creatures, and I'm proud of my community for contributing to expanding habitat through native plants and pollinators too!
