A little history
The process of converting this yard into a habitat began in the summer of 2023, and was inspired by a patch of echinacea purpurea, or purple coneflowers, tucked way back in an untended corner of the property. Throughout much of the summer, these flowers were covered in monarch and swallowtail butterflies, great spangled fritillaries, and chunky bumblebees. Simply put, we wanted more. By converting portions of the lawn to flowerbeds, we have amplified the pollinator presence, decreased the number of Saturdays spent mowing (thank goodness!) and have been treated to daily visits from red-throated hummingbirds, too!
