Our church, the United Congregational Church of Westerly, United Church of Christ, is now in year 6 of our Pollinator Gardens project. Our goal is to make all of our property around the church pollinator friendly and, thus far, we are making excellent progress toward our goal. We have a meadow, an ombrotropic bog, a rain garden, a welcome garden, a raised garden and a shadow garden. In addition, the acreage around our lower parking lot is being allowed to return to a natural meadow-like state. We are very please that this year, for the first time, our Easter Sunrise Service will take place in our Pollinator Gardens, adjacent to the labyrinth, meadow and Peace Pole gardens.
All of our plantings are native, including everything from wild blueberry plants to meadow flowers to a variety of native sunflowers to several varieties of milkweed to herbs and even prickly pear cactus. A more extensive list is being developed as we plan to add signage this year.
