I have planted 75% native plants in my yard. Gardens are all geared for pollinators and birds. I do try to use plants that have multi season interest. I have noted many butterflies, bees, and bird species over the years. My gardens are now over 25-40 years old. I started this garden/yard when I bought this property 40 years ago. It was a soybean field and now is a haven for wildlife.
I have been a Master Gardener for 20 yeqrs and try to promote pollinstor gardening at all our events. I now try to only grow native plants in the gardens. I include shelter sites, water feature(s) and leave the leaves in order to enccourage pollinators and birds
Trees Include: Red Maple, Native Dogwoods, Native Cherry, White Pins, Eastern Red Cedars, Yellowwood, River Birch, Red Oak, White Oak, Willow Oak, Eastern Red Bud, Sweetgum, Tulip Poplar, American Holli, Winterberry.
Shrubs Include: Various Viburnums, Oak Leaf Hydrangeas, Virginia Sweetspire, Sweet pepper bush, Chokeberry, Serviceberry Allspice, Bottlebrush buckeye. Native Azaleas, Highbush Blueberry, Smooth Rose Mallow
Plants Include: Coneflowers, Asters, Coreopsis, native ferns, Goldenrods, Phlox (various) Mountain Mints, Joe-Pye Weed, Ironweed, Blackeyed Susans, Native groundcovers (wild ginger, golden ragwort), wild geraniums, Amsonia (Bluestars), Various spring bulbs and spring Ephemerals (Trillium, Jack in the Pulpit), Cardinal Flower, Anise Hyssop, Milkweeds, Butterfly weed, Blazing Star, Bee Balm, Blue Violet, Boneset, Skullcap, Foam flower, Foxglove Beardtongue, Sunflowers,Nodding Onion, Various herbs (Borage, Dill Parsley) Annuals, (Zinnias, Mexican Sunflowers, Cleome, Cosmos).
