Rye Tavern

517 Old Sandwich Rd, Plymouth, MA 02360, USA

Nestled along Plymouth’s storied Old Sandwich Road, the Rye Tavern is a historic landmark that has welcomed guests for generations. Today, it offers more than hearty fare and scenic outdoor dining—it is also home to a thriving pollinator-friendly garden managed by farmer Ross Prentice.

Within this vibrant 60' x 60' plot, established in 2011, a rich array of produce and herbs flourishes—from cucamelons to rows of tomatoes (with Sun Gold cherries a clear favorite)—all supplying fresh, seasonal ingredients for the tavern’s farm-to-table dishes. The garden also serves as a vital sanctuary for pollinators, featuring native milkweed and Dutchman’s pipe vine for butterflies, alongside sunflowers, snapdragons, zinnias, salvia, marigolds, sweet william, amaranth, strawflower, and dahlia to support a wide range of beneficial insects.

Vegetables grown steps from the kitchen include tomatoes, peppers, beets, lettuce, bok choy, basil, parsley, fennel, squash, peas, and spinach—ensuring peak freshness and flavor in every dish.

Built in 1792, the Rye Tavern seamlessly weaves together history, hospitality, and sustainability. Its flourishing garden not only enhances the menu, but also contributes to the health of the local ecosystem—creating a unique and enduring celebration of community, cuisine, and conservation.
