Hello! Welcome to Teddy's Sanctuary!

 

Just started to clear out years worth of neglect and heavy invasion of porcelain berry, rose of Sharon (which my neighbor insists on keeping), tree of heaven, mugwort, August clematis, and irises and lilies this year.

 

I've planted showy goldenrod, yarrow, butterfly Milkweed (pray for her in my clay soil!), swamp milkweed, lyre leaf sage, mountain mint, fox grape, Eastern prickly pear (on a pot she's doing amazing! But I want a bigger pot now.)

 

I'm so excited!

 

I have some lovely volunteers: common blue violet is coming in nicely as ground cover, I even have a tiny but of common purslane and eastern nightshade. I have three lovely patches of Virginia Spider Wort and I let some Virginia creeper help me fight the other invasive. I have carpetweed and have some non native lambs quarters that I allow just a little bit so I could eat it . Also have a bit of self heal coming in which they say is naturalized although there is a native variety i think.

 

I do have two fig trees that are going to give fruit this year they were a gift from a neighbor and not native that I'm contemplating replacing at some point.

 

I planted the Newtown Pippin tree and another apple pollination partner. The pippin was first cultivated in Elmhurst so I figured we should have more of those trees here.

 

I still have a little strip that I'm cleaning of the non-native lilies and irises. So that will be in addition to the garden that is mentioned above. Some native wild onion or garlic chives is growing there as well as Violet and some invasive grass.

 

Really excited to be part of this!

 

I can't wait to plant more natives. I will do a blueberry bush, morus rubra if I can find one. Also want bergamot sweet coneflower, anise hyssop, wild geranium and more.

 

Also have a patch of American pokeweed! She's wonderful!

 

I also have a front yard that has a white ash growing but unfortunately needs to be be cut down 😩 would love a service berry tree!!!
